How it works
From the first expense to the last payment.
Four steps, each one screen in the app. Follow one weekend at the lake, from an empty group to a settled one.
Start a group
Sign in once, give it a name and a currency, and add the people by name.
- A name is not an account. Jonas and Lea can claim theirs later, if they want to.
- A new group is public unless you choose private.
Add what was spent
Say who paid, one person or several, and who it was for. You see every share before you save.
- The payers have to add up to the total.
- Split equally, by shares, by percent or by fixed amounts.
- Attach the receipt; in a public group it is part of what the link shows.
Settle up
SplitPop turns every expense into balances, then into the fewest payments that settle them.
- A group can also keep the original pairs instead (Direct debts); its settings choose.
- Once the money has changed hands, “Add payment” on the transfer records it. SplitPop never moves money.
- Shares are rounded in a fixed order, so they always add back up to the total.
Or in your assistant
From receipt to link, in one message.
Hand ChatGPT or Claude the receipt and say who it is for. SplitPop creates the group, adds the expense and answers with the link to send.
- SplitPop tells the assistant to read back the amount, the currency, the payer and the split, and to wait for your yes before it records an expense or a payment or changes who is in a group.
- In ChatGPT the receipt photo can go onto the expense; in Claude you attach it in the app, from the expense’s link.
The fine print
Everything the steps leave out, one question at a time.
A bill in another currency
Enter it as you paid it. SplitPop converts it at the rate of the day you enter it, stores both amounts and keeps the rate with the record, so a later edit loses nothing.
Reading in your own currency
Every reader can choose a display currency. Those amounts are estimates, shown next to the group’s own amount, which is what everyone settles in.
Joining and claiming
A guest signs in, then claims the name the others added for them or asks to join as someone new. Both are requests an admin approves, and a group can close either route.
Private groups
A private group shows only its door: the name and the way to ask for access. You can still publish one expense on its own link, and turning publishing off revokes all of them at once.
Signing in
On a hosted sign-in page in your browser, not in a form of ours. SplitPop receives your name, your email address and the identifier of that sign-in.
Payments
A payment is an amount from one person to another, with an optional note, recorded when you add it. It moves the balances and stays in the group’s history.
Rounding
When an amount does not split evenly, the leftover cents go out in a fixed order, so the shares always add back up to the total.
What it costs
Nothing. SplitPop has no paid plan, no trial that ends and no field anywhere for a card.
For developers
SplitPop runs a remote MCP server. The developer reference lists every tool, the limits and the setup for each client. The developer reference
